The First Prayer Meeting

Image
Cheo Han was a vile man who lived in china. He marshaled his forces from a certain house in Changsha for a campaign against   foreigners and Christians . With large colored posters printed in wooden blocks he pictured Christianity in vile forms. He   portrayed the Christians laying prostrate before a hog hanging on the cross. The Christians labored to break down the power of Cheo Han and to march into the closed region of Changsha.   They prayed, they beseeched God, they made Changsha the target for the arrows of their petition. God answered their prayers in the most unusual manner. Cheo was arrested and imprisoned by the Chinese government as a dire menace to the goodwill among neighboring nations.   God answered the Christian prayers “open Changsha for the preaching of the gospel”. Every block printed vile Christian’s portrait was brought down. Cheo’s printing presses were confiscated. Amazingly but true the very house where his presses issued the ant...

A Shining Witness

A stressed-out woman was tailgating a man as they drove on a busy road. When he slowed to a stop at a yellow light, the woman hit the horn, cursing and screaming in frustration and gesturing angrily. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a police officer who ordered her to exit the car with her hands up. He took her to the police station and placed her in a holding cell. An hour later, the officer returned and said, “I’m sorry, Ma’am. This has been a big mistake. When I pulled up behind you, I heard what you said and saw what you did. Then I noticed your ‘What Would Jesus Do?’ license plate holder and your ‘Follow Me to Sunday Service’ bumper sticker. I assumed the car was stolen!” In Matthew 5:14 Jesus says “you are the light of the world”. Darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the  people (Isa. 60:2). The unbeliev...

THE SILENT INFLUENCE

The late Peter Marshall, used to love to tell the story of “The Keeper of the spring,” a quiet forest dweller who lived high above an Austrian village along the eastern slopes of the Alps. The old man had been hired many years earlier by a town council to clear away the debris from the pools of water that fed the lovely spring flowing through their town. With faithful, silent regularity he patrolled the hills, removed the leaves, branches, and silt from the water. By and by, the village became a popular attraction for tourists. Graceful swans floated along the crystal clear springs, farmlands were naturally irrigated and the view from restaurants was picturesque. Years passed then one evening the town council met for its semi-annual meeting. As they reviewed the budget, one man’s eye caught the salary figure being paid the obscure keeper of the spring. The treasurer asked, “Who is this old man? Why do we keep him on year after ye...

YOUR RIGHTEOUSNESS WILL SHINE LIKE DAWN

A schoolmaster in France was discouraged with one of his students. He wrote in his roll book concerning this student, "He is the smallest, the meekest, the most unpromising boy in my class." Half a century later, an election was held in France to select the greatest Frenchman. By popular vote, that meekest, smallest, most unpromising boy was chosen. His name was Louis Pasteur, the founder of modern medicine. At age seventy-three, a national holiday was declared in his honor.  He was too old and weak to attend the ceremony in Paris, so he sent a message to be read by his son. The message read: "The future belongs not to the conquerors but to the saviors of the world." David wrote Psalm 37 to those who are vexed by the prosperity of the wicked prosper. He wrote to those who may be tempted to give up d oing the right thing because observation seems to suggest that it is not worth it. David said “ Commit your way to the Lord , trust also in him, and He shall...
